Church Council
The Church Council of Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church of Bedford County, Inc. met on August 9 with 18 members present. Alvis Turrentine called the meeting to order and opened with prayer.
Brother Jim gave us a brief over-view of what he thinks the Church should concentrate on next which is a “visitation” program for our community. He handed out a sample of a brochure that would be a useful tool in conjunction with this project.
The minutes of the May 19 Church Council were read. Mr. Bill may moved that they be accepted with Freddie Pimentel seconding. Motion carried.
Finance Report – Attachment A
Minutes were read from the Finance Meeting of May 16. Reports were then handed out and reviewed by all present. Mr. May commented that we were on track to our 2010 Budget. Motion made by Freddie Pimentel and seconded by Paul Gambill that the Finance Report be approved. Motion carried.
Trustee Report – Attachment B
Minutes of the July 14 Trustee Meeting and a meeting held just prior to this council meeting were read by Dorris Turrentine.
The building is complete and has been inspected by Mr. Antosh from Codes. However, after the inspection, Mr. Antosh, called and said that the floor must be insulated. Since it wasn’t on the drawing that he approved, insulation had not been installed and Brent, our building manager, thinks it’s a bad requirement. Brent will seek our Architect’s help to request Codes to accept the building as it.
Alvis asked for a motion to accept the Trustee’s report and give them approval to complete the outstanding items – 1) addition of an awning on the new southwest end of the building, 2) purchase a fireproof box, and 3) get a new contract with either the current or new bug control company.
Motion was made by Betty Ann Nelms with Tony Jackson seconding that we accept the Trustee Reports. Motion carried.

They have money in their treasury – so let them know of

Old Business:
The Church Prayer Call List and the Church Web Site seem to be doing good. We could use a new picture of the Church for the Web-site which will be made as soon as Freddie’s field is green again. Debbie is still doing an outstanding job with the Church sign and we thank her for efforts. A new Directory will be done in 2011.
New Business:
The Bishop has requested that a special offering be taken on Sunday, August 22 for the “Bishop’s Flood Relief Appeal”. After a brief discussion a motion was made by Paul Gambill and seconded by Tony Jackson that our Church give $1000 to this cause. If contributions do not meet the $1000, the Church will make up the difference. We will announce this in the bulletin on August 15 and put in the brochure to explain the program. Motion carried.

Tony Jackson requested the Church purchase a blower to use here at the Church. Paul Gambill seconded this request. Motion carried.

Ø Judy Blevins was asked if she would help with the design/make-up of the brochure for our Church – she agreed.
Ø Betty Ann Nelms was asked to help co-ordinate the “Open House” date of October 17. This date was picked to invite the community to come in and meet us. Light refreshments were suggested with a time of maybe 1-3 or 2-4 on the Sunday afternoon. Our Church Brochures should be ready by this time to have as a handout to visitors.
Ø Paper Copies of the minutes will be available upon request. These are also made available in electronic form (e-mail sent out by Alvis) and are usually posted on the Church’s web-site (with the exception of the Finance Report).
- The last requirement for incorporation of our church has been completed which was to change our property deed to the new legal church name and record it in the Register of Deeds. The Church’s legal name is: Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church of Bedford County Inc. We will continue to go by Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church – our incorporated name is for legal purposes.
- Several important dates were set. Revival was set for October 3-6. An appreciation dinner for our building contractor, Kevin Clifton and others who helped with the addition was set for September 18. An open house reception was planned for October 17 and all the community will be invited.
Ø Charge Conference will be November 7: Pastor Parrish Committee and the Lay Leadership Committees will need to meet soon to make appointments and recommendations to the Church Council.
